Evol
Tore Rinkveld, better known as Evol, is a German artist. His artwork simplifies buildings into basic recognisable features. He paints on a variety of public surfaces, usually opting to create homes on the surfaces of graffitied electrical boxes and concrete planters. His studio work focuses on transforming reclaimed cardboard into buildings.
While looking at Evol's work, I gravitated toward his cardboard designs, and I attempted two different ways at recreating his work.
The first was simply inspired by him, and I used the cardboard as a base to cut from and add layers to. I wanted add some three dimensionality to it, and simplified the elements. I think that it's quite a minimalistic way of representing a building / windows, and I think that, while it doesn't entirely mimic Evol's work, it's a subtle way of referencing it.
My second attempt is more recognisably a pastiche. I printed off a photo I had took of a building, and cut out the details I wanted to include. I then glued them onto the cardboard. While the method doesn't match up, I found this to be an effective way at recreating his work, and it's pretty quick to do too!
I like both of the versions as I find that they have their own charms. The first one is a little more visually interesting to me, as you can see the different layers, whereas the second one appeals more as it's somewhat more crisp and accurate.
