Research Videos (+Quiz)
To start the project off, we were given links to videos that'd teach us some key aspects behind abstract art, including notable artists. Additionally, we were assigned a quiz based on some of these videos so we could show our understanding of them.
Some of the questions were easier to answer than others - some of the answers were explicitly stated within the videos, others required some additional thought, and there were a couple that you needed to take a quick detour and search elsewhere for.
Overall, I found the quiz somewhat useful. It'd be a good way to get people to engage in the videos if they usually struggle, as it forces you to remain attentive throughout the whole thing in order to get the answers. Admittedly though, I struggled a little to focus at times as I was trying to keep on top of the quiz questions, which meant I might've missed other notable details about abstract art in general, as opposed to the information that primarily applied to those featured within the quiz.
Here are the links and summaries of each of the videos that were assigned.
- Interview with the Artist: "Caro: Close Up" - An interview with the artist Anthony Caro that briefly touches upon various topics, including his sculpture in general, and both his personal process, and how he works when collaborating with others.
- Sculptor Louise Nevelson - As the title suggests, a video that purely focuses on the abstract sculptor Louise Nevelson. The video shows some of Nevelson's work, and explains some basic information about her. It also features clips of Nevelson herself talking about how her artwork.
- Alexander Calder at Tate Modern on The Art Channel - A review of Alexander Calder's "Performing Sculpture" exhibition at Tate Modern. Grace Adam and Joshua White present some information about each sculpture before delving into their own opinions about them.
- Abstract Artists In Their Own Words (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4) - An art documentary that has been split into four separate parts. In it, members of the BBC have been given permission to film artists while they work, allowing them to discuss their thoughts and processes, while we're educated about the "story" of abstract art in general.
- The Rules of Abstraction With Matthew Collings (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6) - A documentary that has been split up into six separate parts. Matthew Collings talks about the gradual rise of abstract arts, right from its theosophical roots.
