The Betrayal of Bread Man
For my "final piece", I wanted to create something more in depth. It captures creation, destruction, and reconstruction, taking some inspiration from past work and some of the artists I didn't quite get round to exploring. The Betrayal of Bread Man is the destruction section.
Having made the bread heads, I wanted to go onto making something out of at least one of them. When my teacher linked me to Tasumi Orimoto's Bread Man, I immediately wanted to create the video below.
In the video, you'll see me turning my dad into a bread man using his bread head, before mostly ripping (with the exception of that one, careful snipping) his new identity away. Doing this was a really fun experience, mostly because of how absurd it felt. Admittedly, it wasn't as exaggerated as I had wanted it to be - I'd have liked to have done more snipping, perhaps a little slicing too, but I was trying to be careful as to not accidentally wound dad in the process.
Of course, there are other things I'd change. In an ideal situation, I would've had a blank background rather than my kitchen, but I was utilising the space I had. I think it also could've been interesting if I had perhaps worn my bread head too, but ultimately, I'm glad I didn't otherwise it would've took away some of the meaning. To me, this video shows a more negative side of family life - the idea of things tearing you apart and breaking you down.
I mentioned previously that I'd like the bread heads to be displayed with this video, and I think that the importance of that is that mine and Luke's heads were still in tact. It's a bit of a representative of how my parents have always been there for us, even when things are rough for them as well.
